What Is Permanent Jewellery?
Like an upgraded version of the “best friends necklace,” permanent jewellery showcases your bond with a loved one or BFF. Unlike traditional jewellery, with a clasp for easy removal, permanent jewellery is welded together, making it a long-lasting piece of jewellery you can wear for a while. Permanent jewellery can mark memorable occasions or a special connection with someone.
Permanent jewellery is a type of jewellery that is skillfully welded on your body (wrist, neck, or ankle). It has no clasp and needs to be cut off to remove. You can get permanent jewellery in all the typical pieces you’d normally find with a clasp, but bracelets are the most sought-after. Bracelets are absolutely the most popular, and usually what clients start with—they are the easiest ‘gateway’ permanent jewellery piece to start with. However, most permanent jewellery providers also offer necklaces, anklets, earrings, and rings (even toe rings!).
People love it because it is a very low-maintenance way to wear jewellery that fits perfectly and that truly lasts forever—you can wear it in any temperature, in the ocean, in the pool, in a workout—it lives with you and only becomes more beautiful as it ages (if in the appropriate materials). Jewellers who sell permanent jewellery typically offer high-quality materials, such as solid 14k or 18k gold, solid sterling silver, AA-AAA quality natural bezel set stones, and more. These types of materials are highly performative for everyday permanent wear.
Getting a piece of permanent jewellery will require an appointment and must be done in-store. It’s not something that you can order online and ship to your home due to the welding process. After you pick your chain, and any charms, our expertly trained staff will measure the perfect fit and weld it to your wrist!
Is it Safe to Get Permanent Jewellery?
Permanent jewellery is safe to wear and the process is typically quick and painless. Most jewellers will place a leather piece or other protective item on your skin before welding to protect the skin from heat and possible sparks.
If there's a slight risk of skin irritation, especially if you have any allergies or skin sensitivities, be sure to let the jeweller know about such issues so they can help you choose the appropriate material. Typically, 14k gold pieces (or higher) work best for people with metal allergies. The beauty of permanent jewellery is that you don’t really need to worry about it.
Can Permanent Jewellery Ever Be Removed?
Although it’s called “permanent” jewellery, these pieces can actually be removed—it just takes a bit more effort than removing it with a traditional clasp. Proper tools are required and you may need the help of your local jeweller. If removing temporarily, remove the piece and save it so it can be rewelded.
When to Wear Permanent Jewellery—and When You Can't
Permanent jewellery can be worn daily, and even when sleeping. Though it works in most situations—even during exercise—there are some scenarios and places where it cannot (or should not) be worn. Here are some common activities to consider before deciding if permanent jewellery is right for you:-
Airport security: Permanent jewellery should not be an issue for metal detectors. If it does trigger the detector, security officers may ask for further screening.
Shower: It's perfectly fine to shower (and swim) while wearing permanent jewellery. Be sure to dry the skin completely to avoid skin irritation from water trapped between the skin and the piece.
MRI: Permanent jewellery needs to be removed when having an MRI test.
X-ray: You should be OK wearing permanent jewellery for an X-ray scan, but always confirm with the testing centre.
Surgery: Typically, permanent jewellery must be removed for surgery and other complex medical procedures. Speak with your healthcare provider to be sure.
Pregnancy: Due to the natural growth (and possible swelling) of the body, wearing permanent jewellery is not a great idea during pregnancy. Your skin may also be more sensitive during this time.
